The Rotary Club of Dallas held its 17th Annual Salute to America’s Veterans on November 10th at the Frontiers of Flight Museum. It was in celebration of Veterans Day, originally as Armistice Day, November 11, 1919 - 102 years on November 11, 2021. It was the 246 anniversary of the Marine Corp which was created in 1775 by a resolution of the Continental Congress. Since that date many thousand men have borne the name “Marine”.
The event was attended by some 350 Rotarians and guests, including some 136 Veterans and First Responders. There were four World War II Veterans in attendance – Lt. Col Joe Turecky, U.S. Air Force (Ret.) – Rotarian, Linus Wright, U.S. Army – Rotarian, Robert Ashford, U.S. Air Force – Guest, and Arthur Wood, U.S. Army - Guest. Both Joe and Robert will be celebrating 100 years of age on November 25., 2021 and March 28, 2022. Additionally, we were honored to have Veterans from the Happy Warriors, the Green Beret Army Special Forces and active military from the 1st Cav, Fort Hood, TX. As a special recognition in appreciation of their services during the COVID19 pandemic, we were privileged to had members of the Dallas Police Department and nurses from the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital.
The Keynote Speaker was Ross Perot Jr. who participated in a fireside chat with Jody Dean discussing his helicopter flight around the world, the values and the leadership traits that he and his father gained by their services in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force. Ross Perot was the Keynote Speaker on November 9, 2011 and at that time the Perot Patriot Award was established. Recognition of Veterans and our Military Men and Women was done so by Jody Dean and the Vocal Majority Express with the Military Service Hymns.
The 17th Annual Salute to America’s Veterans had some 38 sponsors and a silent auction with over 100 items for bidding. Funds raised from the event will go to support the USO DFW and the George W. Bush Institute Military Service Initiative.
