On April 15th the "Wizard of Words" Michael Brundy presented an interesting and entertaining biography of Henrietta Robinson Green a/k/a "The Witch of Wall Street." She came by this moniker because she always wore black after her husband died and because she rarely bathed. But as Michael pointed out her unwholesome reputation came from the perspective of male Wall Street traders. Biographies by women paint a much more admirable picture. Hettie began learning about finances at an early age from her father and grandfather and as a young woman was both charming and sociable. She was raised in a wealthy Quaker family and inherited income from a $5 million trust. She used these proceeds to invest in stocks, "greenbacks," from the Civil War and railroads. She got some bad press when she tried to get treatment for her son Ned at a charity hospital. Although she was not known to be philanthropical she left her estate equally divided between her son and daughter Silvia. Ned in turn left his estate to Silvia who left all but $2 million of a $200 million estate to charity. Born in 1835 and passing away in 1916 before the passage of the 19th Amendment, Hettie was a remarkable woman whose life would have been viewed much differently had she lived in the late 20th Century.
