Victor Barnes, a member of RI's Senior Management Team, brought our message on September 30th on the topic "Diversity, Equity and Inclusion." Although his remarks were directed at Rotary clubs specifically they apply generally to society as well. Diversity is important as interaction becomes more and more common in an increasingly interdependent world. Seeking to incorporate diversity in our clubs provides a wider perspective on the interests and attitudes of others. Equity seeks to provide opportunities for individuals to succeed, both in access to resources and in equal treatment by the law and society. Two points worthy of repeating are the need to be on the lookout for and avoidance of things like stereotyping others and offensive ethnic jokes and a willingness to recognize our own implicit biases and to do our best to overcome their impact as we interact with persons of different races and backgrounds.
