Michael Richman, vice-president for marketing at The Dallas Summer Musicals was our speaker on April 21st on the topic " Musicals and Marketing in the Age of Covid." The DSM has a long history as one of the stellar entertainment venues in Big D. From 1941 to 1950 musicals and operettas were performed at the open air State Fair Bandshell. In 1951 productions were moved to the State Fair Music Hall. In 2016 the DSM and the Winspear Hall partnered in the national group "Broadway Across America."
Like all live-performance media the DSM suffered greatly from crowd prohibitions brought on by Covid 19. Joined by 23 other companies live performances have been streamed to homes around the country. The DSM will be the first company in the country to open with a live performance of the musical "Wicked" on August 3rd to be followed by "Hamilton" and two other musicals in the upcoming season. Happily over 20,000 season tickets have been sold and two-thirds of the annual gala spaces have been filled.
The DSM continue to share with the community with $50,000 in scholarships awarded to high school performers and "Tonys" awarded to the best high school musicals.
