Dec. 15, 2021 11:45 a.m. - 1:17 p.m.
Jacques Marquis will speak, and then introduce Alex, who was a 2013 Cliburn Competition competitor! Jacques Marquis joined the Cliburn as president and CEO in March 2013 with outstanding expertise and a wealth of international music competition experience. Since then, he and his team have majorly expanded the Cliburn’s offerings and brand. New local concert series include the Cliburn Festival, the club series Cliburn Sessions, and the free Cliburn in the Community concerts. He also launched a third quadrennial international competition: the Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition and Festival, for 13- to 17-year-olds. The CLIBURN LIVE webcast initiative now produces live online broadcasts of more than 250 performances over a 4-year cycle, amassing over 8 million views in 170 countries. In education, the past eight years have seen the doubling of the Cliburn in the Classroom in-school education programs to 300 per year, as well as the creation of "Van Cliburn: an American Hero,” which tells the story of Van Cliburn to 12,000 4th graders each year in partnership with Performing Arts Fort Worth. In 2020, the Cliburn quickly transitioned to primarily digital programming, creating several online series designed to inspire people of all ages with classical music. With initiatives such as Cliburn Kids (music education videos and lesson plans for elementary students) and Cliburn Masterpiece (deep dives into the greatest piano works), Cliburn videos amassed more than 1.2 million views in that extraordinary year, with more than 100,000 hours of music being watched across 100 countries. In addition to continuing to grow those programs, the Cliburn is currently deep in planning for all three of its international competitions—two of which were postponed due to the pandemic—which will now all take place over a 13-month time period: the sixteenth edition of the flagship Van Cliburn International Piano Competition (June 2022); the Cliburn International Amateur Piano Competition (October 2022); and the Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition and Festival (June 2023). A bilingual executive with degrees in business administration and music, he previously served as executive and artistic director of Jeunesses Musicales Canada, where he was instrumental in establishing the Montreal International Musical Competition and oversaw 11 editions of that competition.
Alex McDonald bio: Since his orchestral debut at age 11, pianist Alex McDonald has soloed with the Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de Mexico, the Louisiana Philharmonic, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and the Utah Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has performed across the United States as well as in Israel, Mexico, Canada, Japan, and South Korea; additionally, he has been a featured performer on PBS, WRR (Dallas/Fort Worth), NPR, and WQXR (New York City). Awards include second prizes at the 2007 New Orleans International Piano Competition and 2001 Gina Bachauer International Young Artist Piano Competition, and 2008 Harvey Fellowship by the Mustard Seed Foundation. In 2013, he was a participant in the Fourteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Dr. McDonald is currently the festival director for Basically Beethoven, a thriving summer concert series in downtown Dallas’ Arts District. He has taught at Texas Woman’s University, Richland College, and The Juilliard School, where he also was a Teaching Fellow for both the Literature and Materials and Piano Minor departments. Mr. McDonald received his pre-college training under Lois Nielson, his bachelor’s degree from the New England Conservatory with Academic Honors and Distinction in Performance under Russell Sherman, and his master’s and doctoral degrees from Juilliard under Yoheved Kaplinsky and Julian Martin. |

Danny Martin Co-Founder and CEO, Esposure
Danny Martin started making his mark on the esports industry during his time as a University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) student athlete studying small business management and entrepreneurship. His first gig in gaming involved repairing gaming equipment for his classmates with the knowledge and skill he’d gained in the infancy of esports. It wasn’t long before he recognized the financial opportunity available in organizing large-scale esports tournaments. Having built a database of gamers through friends and contacts on campus, Danny started hosting tournaments, and his first esports business, Geekletes, was born.
After leaving UTSA, Danny’s career and interest in esports continued to grow. By 2015, he co-founded and self-funded his own esports organization by turning his 2,000-square-foot Downtown Dallas loft into a gaming esports arena. Today, Danny is the Co-Founder and CEO of Esposure, a global esports technology company with a proprietary Education to Entertainment (E2E) ecosystem focused on developing the next generation of esports professionals and competitive gamers.
Entrepreneurship is in Danny’s DNA. His uncles owned and managed a landscaping company, and Danny worked for them while he was in high school. Watching them operate their own business solidified Danny’s interest in being an entrepreneur. Those memories, paired with his interest in providing value to the community, have encouraged Danny to push forward in his entrepreneurial journey.
In addition to mentors like his family members, professors and tech industry experts, Danny credits his ability to persevere to his days running track in his hometown of Lancaster, Texas throughout high school and at UTSA. “Building a business is like a marathon. There are constant ups and downs, but you have to understand goal-setting, pace and milestones. You have to have the energy to keep pushing forward – enough energy to be better than your competitors.”
He’s still on a fast track today, determined to engage and empower 20,000 students and young adults with STEM esports education and career exploration by 2025. His passion for helping others has allowed him to speak to more than 5,000 students, parents and esports enthusiasts at more than 35 events. So far, more than 250 students have completed the MasterClass, Esposure’s STEM.org Accredited course covering core principles in management, marketing, production, technology, and competition.
Under Danny’s leadership as CEO, Esposure has made significant strides and is seeing steady growth. The company has earned over $3 million in revenue and has grown to over 30 employees. Danny has personally mentored 14 interns and recently bolstered the company’s capabilities in areas such as technology, production services and design through strategic hiring.
Beyond his work with Esposure, Danny remains committed to the community, serving on the boards of Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star and the Esports Trade Association. In addition, Danny began lending his expertise to a new Esports Business Management course at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas in 2021, contributing curriculum focused on esports team organization, management and recruitment. |

Charles Haley, Founder of Tackle Tomorrow Born in Gladys, Virginia, Charles Haley attended William Campbell High School. He played football throughout high school and won many accolades his senior year. Unfortunately, he was not highly recruited. When James Madison University extended the offer, he accepted, being the sole school at the time to do so. JMU took a chance on Haley because he was a great football player, but he struggled badly with reading. With perseverance and the guidance of an educational mentor, and while continuing to impress on the football field, Chales graduated, earning his diploma. He was drafted to the San Francisco 49ers, won 2 Super Bowl rings; was traded to the Dallas Cowboys and won 3 Super Bowl rings. During that time, he married and started a family. Charles has 4 children. In 2015, Charles was honored by being inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. Going into college, Charles Haley was 3 grade reading levels behind. James Madison University saw the potential in Charles Haley and that is what inspired him to partner with Dallas Civic Leader, Bob Bowie and start Tackle Tomorrow. Since 2014, Tackle Tomorrow, a non-profit organization, provides resources and support to students who struggle to read and write at 6 DISD schools: Whitney M. Young, H.J. Holland, Cinton P. Russell, R.L. Thornton, Frederick Douglass Elementary Schools & Paul L. Dunbar Learning Center. Charles Haley has impacted, and continues to change the lives of students in the Dallas Independent School District with Tackle Tomorrow’s programs and mission. .
